Are Cairns spiders dangerous, and can you get rid of them?

In short: most are harmless, but the redback is venomous and common around homes, in sheds, under outdoor furniture and in roller-door tracks. A professional treatment is a residual spray to eaves, window frames, fence lines and the sub-floor that kills on contact and keeps working for months, plus knock-down of existing webs. It is backed by a 6-month internal guarantee.

Spot the problem early

Six signs of a spider problem.

A few spiders are normal in the tropics, but these signs mean the population around your home needs treating.

Webs in eaves & corners

Fresh webbing building up in eaves, window frames, corners and around outdoor lights.

Egg sacs

Round, papery egg sacs under furniture, ledges and eaves, each one a future generation.

Redbacks in sheds

Redbacks in sheds, under outdoor settings, in stored toys and along roller-door tracks.

Huntsman indoors

Large huntsman coming inside after rain, harmless but a real fright on the wall.

White-tails inside

White-tailed spiders roaming internal walls and bedding, hunting other spiders.

Droppings on windows

Dark spotting under webs on windows and sills where spiders are feeding.

Seeing any of these? Book a treatment today, especially if redbacks are near a play area.

Know the spiders

The spiders that set up around Cairns homes.

Most spiders are harmless and even useful, but a couple need careful handling. We focus the treatment on the venomous redback and the heavy web-builders, while leaving the garden's natural balance where we sensibly can.

In the tropics spiders are active all year, and shaded, sheltered eaves and patios are prime real estate.

Redback
Venomous, treat on sight

Small and black with the red stripe. Hides in dry, sheltered spots and delivers a serious bite. Our top priority.

Huntsman
Harmless but startling

Large and fast, comes indoors after rain. Not dangerous, but a real fright on the wall or the car visor.

Golden orb weaver
Big external webs

Spins large, strong webs across paths, eaves and gardens. Harmless, but a real nuisance outdoors.

White-tailed
Roams indoors

Hunts other spiders and roams internal walls and bedding. Best kept out of the bedroom.

Spider questions

Straight answers on spiders.

The questions Cairns locals ask us most. Not sure if it needs treating? Send a photo and we will tell you.

Ask us anything
Do you treat redbacks specifically?
Yes. The venomous redback is our top priority. We target the dry, sheltered spots they love, sheds, roller-door tracks, outdoor furniture and play equipment, with a residual that keeps working.
Will it kill the webs already there?
We knock down existing webbing and egg sacs as part of the treatment, then leave a residual barrier so new webs do not build straight back up in the eaves and patio.
Is the spray safe for pets and kids outside?
Yes. We use low-toxicity residual products applied to harbourage areas, not open surfaces, and brief you on any short re-entry time. We always plan around pets, kids and ponds.
How long before the webs stop coming back?
Most webbing species are knocked right down within about two weeks, and the residual barrier keeps eaves and windows clear for months. A spring or pre-wet treatment keeps you on top of it.
Do harmless huntsman need treating?
Not for safety, they actually eat other pests. But our external barrier reduces how many wander inside after rain, which is usually what people are really after.
What about white-tailed spiders indoors?
We can add a targeted internal treatment for white-tails, which hunt other spiders along walls and bedding. Tell us when you book and we will include it.
